Rozina Islam, a senior journalist of Bangladesh’s largest circulating daily ‘Prothom Alo’ was arrested on 17 May under the Official Secrets Act. She was accused of stealing confidential secret documents and espionage. Following the incident, fellow journalists came out on the streets demanding her release. At the initial stage of the scandal, everyone thought she was taken into custody forcefully by the Police. As an attempt to create a tension between the government and journalists, a vested quarter tried to exploit the situation in their favor and misguided the international media wrongfully accusing the government of repression against freedom of speech.
